No more GitHub Copilot for me

⚠️ This entry is already over one year old. It may no longer be up to date. Opinions may have changed.

I was an avid user of GitHub Copilot during the technical preview phase. Apparently, as many as 1.2 million developers used Copilot. But now Copilot is out of beta and suddenly costs money.

Sure, GitHub and Microsoft want to make money, but somehow I think it’s a shame that Copilot suddenly becomes paid and then costs so much money ($10 per month or $100 per year).

If I would use Copilot to write code professionally, I would not think twice and pay the money. (Leaving aside that I probably wouldn’t be allowed to use Copilot professionally, because GitHub would have access to possible company secrets.) But just for a few hobby projects? Nah, it’s way too expensive for me, most of my subscriptions are cheaper.

Too bad.
