Google will delete your data when inactive

⚠️ This entry is already over one year old. It may no longer be up to date. Opinions may have changed.

Google is introducing new policies to cause data in unused products to be deleted after extended periods of inactivity. For example, anyone who has uploaded photos to Google Photos but does not use Google Photos for two years will have their photos automatically deleted.

This is yet another reminder that no company has anything to give away for free, not even Google. Storage space is not free and Google will have to cross-subsidize the costs somehow.

If you want to store your data securely in the cloud, you should probably pay for it. But ideally not Google, but a provider that does not scan your data to personalize advertising. I am currently very satisfied with Hetzner Storage Share and the hosted Mailcow. But there are also a number of other good providers.
